Island made Compost
We’ve got some ambitious plans in the works to start making our own compost on the island. At this stage, it’s still very much a planning process, with lots of thinking around scale, materials, and what will work best in our conditions. For now, we’ve only been experimenting with small, trial batches to get a feel for the process and learn what works and what doesn’t.
These early attempts are just the beginning. As we dial things in, the goal is to turn this into a much larger project that will help close the loop on waste and improve soil health across the farm. There’s a big compost build coming — and when it does, it’ll be a major step toward a more self-sufficient system.
Fixing our Breakwater
This season reminded us just how much power the ocean holds. A run of heavy swell put our breakwater to the test, and eventually a large chunk was torn free and thrown clear — a stark reminder that nothing out here is ever truly permanent. When the sea decides to move things, it does so on its own terms.
With no option to wait and weather still unpredictable, we worked on a temporary fix to stabilise the damage and protect what was left. Thanks to the help, tools, and local knowledge of our neighbours, we were able to secure the break and buy ourselves some time. It wasn’t a perfect solution, but it was a solid example of how things get done on the island — people pitching in when it matters.
Getting Cows
Life on Motiti Island is slowly taking its next step forward. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been laying the groundwork to bring cattle onto the farm — putting in new fencing, strengthening existing boundaries, and adding more water tanks to make sure everything is ready. It’s all part of a bigger plan to build a more resilient, self-sufficient setup that works with the land and the conditions out here. There’s still plenty to do, but seeing these pieces come together makes the future of the farm feel a lot more real.
